The country is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Dr King’s speech and the second inauguration of of a Black President. However, for the vast majority of African-Americans, Dr. King’s dream is still far from a reality. In December Black Adult unemployment was 14% and teenage unemployment, 40.5%.
The President’s State of the Union address should focus on how to resolve the housing crisis, make home loans more accessible, encourage corporations to pay small biz suppliers more quickly and establish a National Commission on Black Unemployment.
MLK Holiday is a time to reflect on racial progress. Economic growth is picking up but black unemployment has not improved much. It is time for a National Commission on Black Unemployment.
